fee waiver to poor students among forward castes

The Chief Mini ster, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, has directed officials to work out modalities to provide fee waiver to poor students among forward castes.
Under this provision, students belonging to any caste or religion can study engineering, medicine, MCA, MBA and graduate courses without paying any fee, provided their family income is below Rs 1 lakh per annum.
This decision would extend free education to all economically backward families in the state, which would be the first initiative of its kind in the country. The government is hoping that nearly 20 lakh students belonging to forward castes would benefit from the waiver of fees in professional colleges.
There has been persistent demand from them for the fee waiver.
Earlier, the state government had announced fee reimbursement to students belonging to Kapu community but the scheme could not be extended to the entire community because of paucity of funds.
Several MLAs belonging to the Brahmin, Vysya, Kshatriya, Reddy, Kamma, Kapu and Velama communities had requested the Chief Minister Dr Y.S.
Rajasekhar Reddy, to extend the fee waiver to students coming from poor families in these communities.
“He responded positively and asked officials to work out the modalities for this,” said the Nalgonda MLA, Mr Komatireddy Venkata Reddy, who wanted the benefit to be extended to poor students in the Reddy community.
Earlier, the state government had allocated Rs 30 crore for the fee waiver, which some ministers complained was too meagre.
After getting several representations from forward castes leaders and legislators, the Chief Minister decided to announce the scheme on “saturation” model.
This means all the students within the income limit could get the entire feereimbursement from the government. “Dr Reddy will announce details of the scheme within 10 days,” an official at the Chief Minister’s office said.

Abhinav Gets First Olympic Gold For India

Abhinav Bindra won India's first-ever individual Olympic gold medal when he claimed the men's 10m Air Rifle shooting title.
Bindra, the 25-year-old businessman from Chandigarh, followed his world championship title two years ago to finally win a landmark gold medal for his country.
In one of the most thrilling shooting finals in Olympic history, Bindra overcame a two-point deficit against Hakkinen and one point against Zhu after the qualification rounds to annexe the title.
India, winners of eight field hockey gold medals, had never won an individual Olympic title before Bindra's feat.
The previous best was trap shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore's silver at Athens, while there were bronze medals for wrestler Khasaba Jadhav (1952), tennis star Leander Paes (1996) and woman weightlifter Karnam Malleswari (2000).

China Fest'08

The Chinese rolled out the red carpet to athletes from 204 countries in a spectacular opening ceremony at the Bird’s Nest on Friday.
It was an entertaining show of colour and splendour — a rare treat meant to floor the world-wide television audience — to mark the beginning of the 29th Olympic Games here.
The floor was the magic canvas and the Chinese put technology to optimum use in scripting breathtaking pictures through light and shade, in multiple dimensions, starting with the five Olympic Rings being lifted from the ground by ‘flying’ acrobats.
It was a ceremony that attempted and succeeded in improving upon the novelties of such exercises in the previous editions.
As thousands of performers achieved harmony to the beat of the drums and captivating music, the Chinese also captured the essence of their 5000 years of civilisation in a fashion that defied description.
Billions of dollars may not have succeeded in clearing the air of the smog, but the Chinese children with school bags and props, painted blue skies and white clouds in a jiffy at the centre, perhaps to recall for the elders the memories of the past when nature was at its pristine best.
The thousands of athletes may not have been able to enjoy the marvels of human elegance and choreographic excellence, as they had to wait outside the stadium for the march past. But they had the memories of a lifetime while trooping in, 204 of them with their national flags, including Roger Federer for Switzerland and Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore for India.
The star basketballer, Yao Ming, carried the flag for the host, as he had done in the last Olympics in Athens.
As per the tradition, Greece, the birth place of the Olympics, was the first country to march in and the host was the last to enter the stadium, in an exercise that lasted nearly two hours.
Table tennis star Zhang Yining took the oath of honour on behalf of the athletes of the world. The athletes are the ones who would hold centre-stage for the next fortnight and the cultural show literally set lofty standards.
Mercifully, for the 91,000 spectators including many dignitaries from abroad, not to speak of the performers in the middle and the athletes, rains stayed away as nature bowed to the wishes of a country of 1.3 billion.
The Chinese have set the tone for the Games. The mission of topping the medals table remains for the host.
